The Cube Orchestra
Have been appearing 'live' at Bluescreen since 2007, they just turned up one night and stayed! Sadly as of 2023, they have now called it a day. But they have re-soundtracked and re-scored many many films that we have screened at past Bluescreens, and they only got to see a short bit of each film before they re-soundtracked them, which has made for some very interesting and creative musical and filmic events!
So many thanks to Marcus and all the past players in the Orchestra for all the soundtracking!

Bluescreen Hi-Fi DJs
2005 Saw the Introduction of Bluescreen Hi-Fi - Bluescreen's musical outlet! The idea was to introduce the same policy as we had with films in the Cinema to the music played in the bar - Local and bring and play! It kinda worked ok and they did a few things at Ashton Court Festival that year, and they stayed and became Bluescreens resident inhouse DJ's, playing an eclectic mix of tunes which continues to this day!
A big thanks to past and present DJ's: Rick, Bij, Shaun, Tom, Deborah, Matt, Tom and anyone else who has played some tunes at Bluescreen.
Current resident Bluescreen Hi-Fi DJ is Tom F (with DJ Steve Cube and Dom on the subs bench, when Tom cant make it!).

2011 Update - '10 Years of celebrating all things Audio-Visual'
(From the old Cube Website Bluescreen History section)
Its been 5 years since we updated the History section, so its apt that in our 10th year that we update it again!
Bluescreen has been successfully running short film nights at the Cube Cinema, Bristol for 10 years now, specifically showcasing the work of local Bristol filmmakers. Evolving from past film jams & experimental screen events held at the Cube, Bluescreen now hosts bi- monthly walk-in independent film programmes. Giving people, from first time filmmakers to seasoned professionals, the opportunity to just turn up and screen their films.
Bluescreen operates a walk-in independent film programme, We receive no films beforehand and adhere to a no censorship policy regarding film content, the only conditions we apply is a 20 minute time limit on length of films, but this is only so that we can screen as many films as possible! This bluescreen ethos has worked well, with anything from one to three hours worth of films through the door every event to screen, producing a very entertaining and eclectic mix of films, from mini dramas to skate films to animation and beyond! We try to screen any format but easier if its Dvd/Mini Dv, though sometimes we can handle memory sticks!
In the bar resident DJs 'Bluescreen Hi-Fi' play choice records; people chat, drink beer and talk films!
And The Cube Cinemas' very own in-house Orchestra has been kicking off proceedings in the auditorium, by performing an improvised soundtrack to some bluescreen films old and new!
We continue to make and take compilations of films screened at Bluescreen and showcase them at festivals in the UK - Local, national and international: Glastonbury, The Big Chill, Shambala, Supernormal to name a few. And we also screened films at The 2007 Rotterdam Film Festival. We have put on a night about Bike films - Bikescreen, and hosted local independent film groups and have sent films afar a field as San Francisco!
So what for 2011, I hear you ask? Well we have set up a YouTube channel called BluescreenFilms and a Facebook group up is also up and running and our Myspace site. More festival screenings this summer and finding ways to celebrate our 10th anniversary!
Thanks to everyone whose screened a film and came to a screening over the last 10 years. You are the people that make Bluescreen what it is. Hope you can make it back to one of our nights in 2011.

2009 - News Update
(From Myspace)
Feb - Bluescreen @ Berlinale
Bluescreen went to The 2009 Berlinale Film Festival. Had a positive meeting re a Anglo/German bluescreen! Details TBC. watch this space..
Feb - BAFTA NEWS
Big Bluescreen congratulations to Esther May Campbell, whose film 'September', has won a BAFTA Award for the best Short Film of the year. Long term friend of the Cube Cinema and of Bluescreen as well, Esther has screened many of her previous films at Bluescreen over the years. So fantastic news and we send our congatulations to Esther and all who worked on September! Cant wait for the next one!
A week later...The Cube Cinema held its own awards ceremony, in celebration of the Bafta win for 'September', and bluescreen were invited by Esther to introduce the BAFTA award winning film. Thank you Esther and all at the Cube, for a great party!
August - Shambala Festival
Shambala, without doubt is one of our favourite festivals. We had a ball!
This year we were part of a group of people behind the Minds Eye Cinema Tent (SDR Cinema), ie. The Cube Cinema plus friends. Bigger than last years tent and amazingly decorated, with a lovely chandelier, bunting and straw bales as seating! Well done to all the decor crew!
But in typical Bluescreen fashion, all didnt go to plan! We 'lost' 1 of the 2 DVD packs of Bluescreen films we brought along! The one that was lost had on it all the recent Bluescreen films! Bugger! So we had to screen 2007/8 compilations instead. And the missing DVDs? Well they turned up the next day in the van! The rest of the weekend went off really well, with the Cinema tent packed out every night.
Thanks to all who worked and to the people at Shambala for inviting us back again.

2005 - '5 Years of celebrating all things Audio-Visual'
(From the old Cube Website Bluescreen History section)
For over 4 years now.. bluescreen has continually and successfully run regular screenings of short films, by local film experimenters from across the region of the south-west of england.. And as of March 2005 we go monthly!
Based at the cube cinema, bristol, england uk.... bluescreen has built on the success of other past film nights at the cinema - screentime (short films) & film jamm (super 8/video mash-ups)!
We show films on virtually any format - vhs, beta, mini dv, dvd etc... Any subject, style, quality shown - music promos, shorts, mini features, animations, no budget, low budget, experimental and interactive - films with live soundtracks and voice overs too. Our ethos has always been you bring 'em in and we'll bung 'em on screen. We try as much as possible to be a censorship free zone! Filmmakers have now started to make films especially for our next screenings too.
At bluescreen, we also like to create a party atmosphere... We have regular DJ's in the bar mixing up dub/punk and everything in-between... we also have screenings/projections in the lounge and bar areas. thus creating an environment for relaxation and chat! We even had fireworks and sparklers on Nov. 5th too!
Recently we introduced bluescreen Hi-Fi - expanding the bluescreen ethos through the music played in the bar. Searching for local music producers to let us play their tunes in the bar at bluescreen nights.
And the name... bluescreen. Well it comes from the animation special effects technique... which creates a blue screen composite image... the blue screen!
bluescreen has also given birth to redscreen, dancescreen, pinkscreen... name a colour, we'll stick a screen on the end of it!
We have successfully...Put together some best of bluescreen promo tapes, showcased to great success in the Blackout tent, at The Ashton Court Festival, Bristol, for the last two years... (2003 & 2004).
Held an open screen event for Brief Encounters called .Best of the Rest. (Nov 2003)
Shown films at other film festivals in Bristol and Manchester (summer 2003)
And plan to do more of the same in the future..
Our nights have become open sessions, whereby filmmakers bring in there films and we screen them, simple as that... first in, first on screen. Open access cinema in action...
We also show bluescreen screened short films before the main feature film at the Cube Cinema. This opens up audiences to the wealth of local talent out there..
And the future? Well anything's possible... come along and find out...
And a big big thank you to all the people who have been involved/helped out along the way! you know who you are!!
