About Bluescreen

We are all about YOUR Short Films...

Bluescreen have hosted Open to all Film Screenings of Independent Short Films at The Cube Cinema in Bristol, England since 2001.

Screening Short Films made by Bristol based Filmmakers, from the Amateur & Pro Filmmakers alike.

UPDATE MAY 2020:
Until further notice there sadly wont be a 'physical' Bluescreen at the Cube Cinema, due to the current health crisis.

We will now be doing bi-monthly online short films streams, with Filmmakers digitally sending us films.

So come and check out: Bluescreen:Bluestream!
(In collaboration with the Cube Cinema)

See below for Film Formats and other requirements for sending us films

And check over in our Latest News Section for details of the next upcoming next events

So Bluestreams basic premise is: You digitally send us your films, and we host and screen them to the world!

And we will try to keep to as much of our regular 'physical' bluescreen nights as possible, i.e. we will screen films in the order they are sent in to us.

If you have a Film you would like to submit, here’s what you need to do...

We are looking for Digi Short Films from the BA (Bristol Area), and as usual, under 20 minutes, can be about any subject or genre or even about the current situation we find ourselves in. The choice is yours, we do like an eclectic programme!

Send us your Film via WeTransfer to bluescreen@cubecinema.com, headed up ‘(date of Month) Bluestream’.

And to make things easier for us, the films will need to be in the following format:
  • MP4
  • H264 Video Compression
  • File size up to 1GB
  • Data rate under 5,000kb/sec
  • Ideally the smallest size file you can manage is best for us.
Also we would love it, if you could do an INTRO to your film (but its not compulsory), either a short video or audio clip of 10 to 60 seconds long – Please send this as a separate MP4 file.

Thank you!

A brief extra curricular History...
Since 2003 we have hosted short film screenings at Festivals in the UK, Europe, USA and have organised other film related events at The Cube Cinema as well. Some highlights.....

We were honoured to be invited over to screen Films at the R Eject Film Festival at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2007.

We were involved in helping to organise the Bristol Filmmakers Festival 2008.

And hosted a 10 year Bluescreen retrospective at the Encounters International Short Film Festival 2011.

2014 saw us screening films at Supernormal in Oxfordshire and at
Moviement at Hamilton House, Bristol and there were some Bluescreen films screened at LAC - Laboratório Actividades Criativas, Lagos, Portugal, courtesy of our friends What Giants!?

2015 we provided a couple of Compilation DVDs to
the Groovy Movie Picture House folks who screen films at lots of festivals.

2015/6  What Giants!? toured Europe by bike and screened some Bluescreen film Compilations on their travels.

2018
saw us programme and screen: Bluescreen Presents: 17 Years of Open Access Film Screenings @ Encounters Short Film Festival @ the Watershed, Bristol.

2020 - Bluescreen: Bluestream was born!

2021 - We will be 20!

Please contact us if you have any queries about screening your films at Bluescreen or if you would like us to come and screen some films at your Festival in 2021: bluescreen@cubecinema.com

15/03/20 - Bluescreen 25/03 Cancellation
Hi All.
Sorry to inform everyone but Bluescreen on the 25th is cancelled, as the Cube will be closed for the next 2 weeks.
Hopefully we will be back on May 27th, but with the ongoing health crisis we will keep you posted.

The Cube have released a statement, which is in full below...
Take care of yourselves out there, love from all at Bluescreen.

Cube Statement:
Dearest Cube Members,
With the escalation of the coronavirus situation, The Cube has decided to close it’s doors to the public starting from Sunday 15th March for an initial period of two weeks.
We have a duty of care to our volunteers, members and our wider community. This is not a decision that has been taken by us lightly. As an autonomous venue, we are lucky to have the ability to make a decision with the health of our community at heart.
We want to be able to be focused on those that need us and those we lean on as well as ourselves and our environment. We are aware that people rely on the cube and we will continue to be supportive of each other.
We understand how disappointing it is that events/screenings will have to be postponed or cancelled. But we believe that the benefit of the culture does not outweigh the risk of spreading this infection. As the situation evolves we will have a clearer idea about what will be cancelled and what can be postponed.
All tickets will be refunded for the first 2 weeks, and we have suspended sales for April for the time being. We will try to reschedule everything. We will keep you updated as the situation evolves.
We all love the cube and want to continue to provide the community and collaboration it gives us. It is a chance for us to come together and come up with new and creative ways to do what we do - we are thinking more radio, film streamings rather than screenings, submission projects, collaborative projects online, digital discussion groups, streamed live events. This will be under the banner of The Cube On Ice, watch this space!
Keep on washing your hands and looking after each other.
Love and solidarity,
The Cube

20/04/19 - New 2 hour Bluescreen!
Read on…
We’ve been chatting and think we need to put a limit on the number of films we receive in at an event.
Reason being, over the last year we have had several nights, where we have had 2 -3 and a half hours’ worth of films in, which on one hand is great but it ends up being a very long night for all and the last few films shown only have the filmmaker and friends left watching. So to make it fairer for all, we are going to trial limiting Bluescreens to 2 hours total screening duration, and also to restrict one film to one filmmaker.
This will then allow all films to be screened at a reasonable hour and also give the opportunity to the audience to stay and watch them too.

SO WHAT WE ARE BASICALLY SAYING IS, IF YOU GOT A FILM, GET DOWN EARLY!

And the next Bluescreen is 29/05/19
